I’m Not an Expert, and That’s Alright
“I Don’t Want to Be Seen as an Expert; I Want to Be Seen as an Experimenter”
As I was watching one of Matt D’Avella’s recent Youtube videos, this quote really resonated with me and how I want to approach writing in 2019.
I’m reminded of the dozen or so times I’ve sat down to write a post for Medium over the past few months but, whether a couple hundred words in or no words in, was ultimately stunted by my own neuroses — a mental block that had me worried that whatever I was going to publish wouldn’t be received well.
The main reason why I felt my posts wouldn’t be received well is because, for one, Medium readers are very smart and analytical thinkers. That’s something that makes Medium good, as to me it seems that people are genuinely excited to offer their input on whatever topic you’re writing about.
At the same time, it’s scary. Scary because if I’m not gathering my thoughts, backing them up with the facts, and presenting them in a consumable way, then I should be prepared for either (1) no feedback or (2) critical/negative feedback.
To that point, I haven’t had the confidence in myself to create posts of that caliber — worthy of positive feedback — because with anything I wanted to write about, I didn’t feel as though I was THAT knowledgeable.
